Selling Guide

A few points to consider while trying to sell a used laptop

1. Why sell? : There has to be a good reason to sell, especially if you are selling a device that is still in warranty. Used laptops, even if sparingly used, invite a different group of buyers who are keen on three things - price, price and price. It is easier to find the value of a used laptop comforting if it has been well used.

2. Delete all private data: But keep an active installation for inspection purposes. If the data is too important, merely deleting or formatting will not make the data inaccessible, find other applications that really wipe the disk clean.

3. Understand the Buyer: The used laptop buyer is not as interested in specs, as the price. The reason someone buys a used laptop is either because he intends to use it as a stop gap arrangement, or he cannot afford a new laptop. In both cases, price is the biggest factor in the equation.

4. Spread the word : There are many free online ad sites that allow you to easily spread the word about the sale. Some sites that can help Clickindia.com, Click.in, Vivastreet.co.in, olx.in, Quikr.com, etc. Besides online sites, you can also put out the word at local IT dealers.

5. Avoid exchange offers : IT dealers tend to view a used laptop as a dead investment, unless quickly sold off. For this reason, they usually undervalue the laptop to guarantee a quick sale. It is best to directly sell to the final user, and then get a fresh laptop from an outlet. This route will take more time, though.

6. Look for a quick Sale : The price of IT products is constantly falling. If there are too few enquiries or those who show interest balk at your expected price, you should consider reducing the price promptly. The quantum of the price cut needs to be carefully evaluated - don't take the word of the first cheapskate your ad attracts, look at present market rates for new laptops and decide. The "I bought it for so much" argument is not just irrelevant, it is inane.

The LX Yardstick

What follows is an approximate valuation of different laptops based on their configuration. This is valid for laptops that are fully functional, have only a few scratches, have no cracks or dents, have atleast 30 mins battery backup and come with carrybag.

Needless to say, these figures change most based on the current prices of new laptops.

Configuration Approx Value
Any CPU, 128 RAM, 20GB HDD, CD Drive, 14" screen, < Rs. 6000
Celeron/Pentium (4/4M or older) CPU, 256 RAM, >40GB HDD, Combo Drive, 14" screen, < Rs. 8000
Modern CPU, >512 RAM, <40GB HDD, DVD Writer, 14" screen, <Rs. 10000
Dual Core CPU, >1GB RAM, >80GB HDD, DVD Writer, 14" Widescreen, > Rs. 12000

Modern CPUs - Celeron / Pentium M, Core Solo, Turion, Athlon /Sempron Mobile
Dual Core CPUs - Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, Turion / Athlon X2

Please Note :
1. Unless there is a specifuc request, dedicated graphics chip does not add value to a used laptop. Same with finger print scanner, shock protection, etc.
2. Brand Power : Some laptops have a reputation for solid peformance. Dell and Sony laptops tend to have such a halo, Acer and Compaq do not. Intel CPUs are seen in a positive light compared to AMD CPUs. This effects value.
